Antique American Shoe-Form Rockingham Treacle Glazed Pen/Quill Stand, Bennington, VT, Mid 19th c.
Here’s an interesting piece for the many collectors of shoe-form smalls: a pen/quill holder in “Rockingham” or treacle glaze, almost certainly produced in Bennington, Vermont, in the mid 19th c. (1840-60). It’s unmarked as is typical, but certainly looks ‘right’, especially on viewing its slip-glazed ‘sole’. Two wells in this shoe-form desk accessory’s top are meant to house dip pens or quills. The molded ceramic shows definition around the sole of the shoe, and a tie or bow at its top. The sole is a matte pale brown and apparently unglazed, as opposed to the rich glossy brown glaze covering the rest of the piece. The latter shows some variation in tone as is usual in these pieces, somewhat recalling tortoiseshell.
Condition is very good overall, with but a flake from the slip-glazed ‘sole’ at the toe (see photos). It measures nearly 4” long, by 1 1/2” wide, and just over 1 1/2” high at the heel.
Overall, a great piece of rustic antique Americana, and an unusual example for collectors of early Bennington pottery.
