Marine Aircraft Group 11 (MAG-11); Bombing Squadron 2
Marine Corps Air Station Quantico, Virginia; 1941
Dimensions: 1/48 scale - pre-finished diecast metal
Wingspan: 11-5/8 inches - Length: 8 inches
Prior to February 1941, gloss chromium yellow was applied to the upper surface of wings and horizontal tails. Additionally, each squadron was divided into six sections, each section having three aircraft apiece. Each section was assigned its own color.
Section #1 - Insignia Red Section #2 - White Section #3 - True Blue
Section #4 - Black Section #5 - Willow Green Section #6 - Lemon Yellow
That color was used for the fuselage band, the cowl colors and the upper wing chevron (
note the "green" color on the mode
l). The entire cowl and fuselage bands are in the designated color for the respective section leaders. The top half of the cowl received the color for the second aircraft in the section, and only the bottom half in color for the third aircraft. While all three members of the section had the over-wing chevron, only the section leaders had the fuselage band.
On the side of each aircraft was number-letter-number code which indicated the squadron, type of squadron, and assignment in that squadron, respectively. For example on the model,
2-MB-13
would be aircraft 13 for section 5 leader of Marine Bombing squadron 2.
The February, 1941 revision eliminated most of the pre-war color worn by the aircraft of the United States Navy. Experiments in 1940 with camouflage lead to the elimination of the chrome yellow wings and silver paint and dope. Colored tails, command bands, chevrons, and CAG stripes were also discontinued. An era had ended; only training aircraft would fly with the yellow wings.
