Description
Delightful Bennington glazed Toby jug. A impressively corpulent Toby with some variation in brown color shades, shown sitting and holding a rope. Perfect for a Sailor or Navy man. Excellent condition.Toby jug is the name of a very special form of pitcher. It is shaped like the full figure of a man or woman. A pitcher that shows just the top half of a person is not correctly called a toby. It is sometimes called a character jug. The Toby Jug was named for Toby Philpot, an infamous drinker mentioned in a British song written in 1761. More examples of toby jugs can be found under Royal Doulton and other factory names. This rare toby jug comes from the Bennington Pottery Collection. He is a seaman holding a rope wearing a round brimmed hat. His shirt is striped and wearing a seaman's overcoat.
The piece has excellent luster.
The piece is marked at the bottom with T-1.
There is a tick mark on the top rim of the hat which is from the original production as it was glazed over at the factory at firing. There is a line under tick but is NOT A CRACK THRUThe mug. It is as made. See pictures.
On his right side is a visible signature which appears to say De Veal or De Vech.
